Today is International Day of the Girl Child. This day has been on the UN calendar since 2012, and aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face today. The day also aims to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.
As a mother of a daughter, this day provides me with the opportunity to discuss the challenges girls across our globe face every day. Whilst my daughter loves school and is eager to hit the dizzy heights of year 6 next year, we are also aware that education whilst a right is not always so for girls in other countries.
Everyone can change this world for the better and as a Mum, I am hopeful that my kids will be part of that change. I am grateful that my kids are able to participate in more opportunities than I did, that gender stereotypes are challenged and limitations put upon us smashed, but I am also grateful that we can be who we truly are and who we aspire to be.
To all the girls out there, you and your voice can change the world. Rise up, be daring, be brave, be courageous and be kind, be you!
Happy International Day of the Girl Child,
